What is running pace

The running pace, also known as pace, is the time it takes you to cover one kilometre (or one mile). It is expressed in minutes per kilometre (min/km) and is the fundamental metric runners use to plan training, set competition goals, and track progress.

Unlike speed (km/h), pace allows runners to think directly about the time needed to complete each kilometre, making it easier to manage effort during a run.

How to calculate your running pace

The formula is simple: Pace = Total time / Distance. For example, if you run 10 km in 50 minutes, your pace is 5:00 min/km. If you run a half marathon (21.1 km) in 1 hour 45 minutes (105 minutes), your pace is approximately 4:58 min/km.
