What Is Fat?
Although the terms "losing weight" and "losing fat" are often used interchangeably, there is an important difference between the two. Here we outline some key distinctions and explain why losing fat is more important than simply losing weight:
⬇️ Weight loss: Weight loss refers to the reduction in total body mass, which can include fat, water and/or muscle.
⬇️ Fat loss: Fat loss specifically refers to reducing the amount of body fat in the system.
⁉️ What is fat? Fat is energy stored by our bodies "just in case" it is needed to maintain bodily functions in an extreme survival scenario.
The amount of fat compared to muscle mass is called the muscle-to-fat ratio, which gives us the % of body fat. Studies show that high levels of body fat are linked to chronic diseases.
If this applies to you, it is recommended to focus on fat loss by consuming fewer calories and/or increasing physical exercise.
Creating a moderate calorie deficit and consuming enough protein daily: between 1.2 and 2.4 grams per kilogram of body weight.
You can also engage in moderate-intensity cardiovascular activity and perform strength exercises to preserve or increase muscle mass.
Finally, if you have a healthy body fat percentage (which varies by sex and age), you can maintain a neutral calorie intake and continue achieving your goals!
💡 Therefore, while weight loss is important for health, fat loss is key to achieving a healthy body composition and reducing the risk of chronic diseases. It is important to remember that fat loss is a gradual process that requires patience to achieve a healthy and sustainable body composition.
